- Copy of the airway bill or ocean bill of lading
The commercial invoice must include all applicable details, including the sellers/buyers names and addresses, description of the merchandise, incoterm, value, and country of origin. Is insurance required?
We often receive this question from import clients. No, insurance is not required, but it is recommended, especially for larger shipments. Shipper should carefully evaluate their potential exposure to loss when importing items. All carriers limit their liability under the terms of carriage. Many trucking companies and customs brokers limit their liability to $50 per shipment, ocean carriers to $500 per shipment, and air carriers to $20 per kilo. Insurance doesn’t cost very much, so if you decide to purchase it, make sure you request it in writing from your broker or forwarder.
