Documentation requirements

If you’re ready to get started, you’re probably wondering which documents are required for import shipments. The most basic document requirements are:

  • Commercial invoice
  • Packing list
  • Copy of the airway bill or ocean bill of lading

The commercial invoice must include all applicable details, including the sellers/buyers names and addresses, description of the merchandise, incoterm, value, and country of origin. Certain type of merchandise require special invoices or additional invoice details – footwear, wearing apparel, bearings, and others. If you have any questions about the documents required for import systems, don’t hesitate to contact us today. We can be reached by phone at 1-310-322-3228 or email at William@cciusa.net.

Is insurance required?

We often receive this question from import clients. No, insurance is not required, but it is recommended, especially for larger shipments. Shipper should carefully evaluate their potential exposure to loss when importing items. All carriers limit their liability under the terms of carriage. Many trucking companies and customs brokers limit their liability to $50 per shipment, ocean carriers to $500 per shipment, and air carriers to $20 per kilo. Insurance doesn’t cost very much, so if you decide to purchase it, make sure you request it in writing from your broker or forwarder.
