What about insurance?

You may be wondering about whether purchasing insurance would be a wise move for the goods you plan on exporting abroad. Insurance is not required for export shipments – however, it is highly recommended. Shippers much carefully consider their potential exposure to loss as a result of lost or damage during the exportation process. All carriers limit their liability under the terms of carriage. For the most part, trucking companies and customs brokers limit their liability to $50 per shipment ocean carriers to $500 per shipment, and air carriers to $20 per kilo. In contrast, insurance costs a relatively small amount, but it gives exporters real peace of mind. We recommend investing in low-cost insurance – and make sure you receive the terms of your coverage in writing from your broker or forwarder.

Is it best to export via air or ocean?

We often hear this question from our clients, and we’re always happy to answer any questions you may have as an exporter or importer. Generally, if your shipment weighs under 150 kilos and doesn’t have a large cubic volume, it will likely be less expensive to ship by air than as ocean freight. This is the case with ocean freight shipments, you have a minimum bill of landing charge, ISF filing requirement, warehouse devanning, documentation charges, and forklift charges. Additionally, if your shipment goes through a government examination, that will also incur much more expense than ocean shipments in most ports.
